              North Carolina governor vetoes bill that would mandate more youths getting tried in adult court

                North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has vetoed a measure that would have ensured more young people accused of serious crimes be automatically tried in adult court. The bill aimed to adjust juvenile justice reforms from recent years involving 16- and 17-year-old defendants called “Raise the Age." The Democratic governor said Friday that the bill would have rolled back those provisions by taking away the option that many of these youths could still be tried in juvenile court. The bill now returns to the General Assembly for a possible veto override. It passed the House and Senate recently with significant bipartisan support.
