Paint Blowing With Straws? ›

Put your liquid watercolor paints in small dishes or paint cups. Use a dropper or paintbrush to transfer one or more droplets of liquid watercolor paint to the paper. Blow through the straw at the paint drops, forcing the paint to move along the paper in tiny rivulets.

The process of blowing the paint across the paper is a great strategy for getting children to focus on their breath instead of their worries. Asking them to take slow, deep breaths as they blow the paint, can have a very calming effect.

Straw paintings are craft objects made by shaping straw into patterns and representational images. By modeling and playing with straw, people, especially women, started weaving straw into artistic objects.

*If you don't have liquid watercolor paint, you can use watered-down food coloring or watered-down tempera paint. Place a sheet of paper on a tray with sides (a baking dish would work) or do this activity outside.

Singing through a straw (also called “straw phonation”) is an incredible vocal technique that helps your vocal muscles build efficient coordination and balance (which for you means more freedom, range, stamina and flexibility!), reduces vocal strain, helps your voice recover from fatigue or sickness, and so much more!

Another way this works is by mixing bright colors in separate cups, when you pour, pour them next to each other using normal acrylic pouring techniques (example below). Tilt the canvas so they meet up, but do not mix them in the one cup! So you can avoid that wasted “muddy mix” result.

Another alternative is using a paint additive, such as Penetrol, which serves a similar purpose as Floetrol in improving the paint's flow and workability. It can be used with both oil-based and water-based paints.

Isopropyl alcohol is another alternative to using silicone oil. It's easy to find and relatively inexpensive, and can work for creating cells but it isn't as effective as silicone oil. Some people simply buy rubbing alcohol from the pharmacy and spray it onto their artwork.

Use your straw to blow air onto your paint drops. This will force the paint drops to move around on the paper. Keep adding more paint drops and blowing them around with your straw until you are satisfied with your design. Notice that colors can mix together to created new colors.

What do children learn from straw painting? ›

This experience, whilst primarily being a sensory exploration, can also be considered an early scientific inquiry into forces, as the children investigate air pressure by pushing and pulling the air through the straw in order to make the paint move or change direction.

Someone gets enough straws (plastic ones, or twigs, anything) for everyone in the group, and the "straws" are all the same length except for one, which is "the short straw". If you pick/draw the short straw, it means that you have to do the unpleasant task.

In sum, straw blowing can help protect bare soil, allowing its seeds to grow undisturbed. This helps with our hydroseeding process to revegetate and revitalize large areas of soil that construction activities have impacted.

Starting with yellow just mix a little blue and red (any two will do) and add this to the yellow – the mixed violet will act as a mixing complement, dulling the yellow down (you don't need to add much). You will need to add white to compensate for the darkening effect.
